Pear Sauce Oatmeal

Yep, I gave pears another chance. For me, so much of the problem was the texture--so gritty and watery! I thought I would never make another oatmeal with them again, but when I thought of making a pear sauce, I knew I had to give it a shot.

Luckily, I was at my parents' house last week, and they had pears. That meant I didn't have to waste any of my own money on a stupid pear. :) The other perk is that my parents have a microwave. Are you aware that I do not own a microwave in my Brooklyn apartment? Nope. I don't.

Of course, you can make pear sauce on the stove, but this is a super fast method that works just as well and is much less daunting! This is an enjoyable pear recipe, although I'll be the first to admit that I like the apple version better. :)

Pear Sauce Oatmeal

by The Oatmeal Artist
Prep Time: 7 min
Cook Time: 5 min
Ingredients (serves 1)
    For the quick pear sauce
    • 1 pear
    • 1 tbsp lemon or orange juice
    • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
    • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
    • pinch of ginger
    For the oatmeal
    • 1 cup milk of choice, or water
    • 1/2 cup rolled oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
    • 1/3 cup pear sauce
    • pinch of salt
    Instructions
    1. Slice pear into wedges or chunks and combine with other ingredients in a microwaveable container with a lid.
    2. Cover and microwave for five minutes. When finished, either puree with an immersion blender for smooth pear sauce or mash with a fork for a chunkier sauce (I chose the latter).
    3. In a medium saucepan, bring milk (I use 1/2 c almond milk and 1/2 c water) to a boil, add oats, and reduce heat to medium. (If you'd like to add flax or chia seeds, do so now.)
    4. Add pear sauce and salt. Stir.
    5. If you'd like to add any extra ingredients (raisins, nuts, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp vanilla extract, pinch of nutmeg, 1/8 tsp lemon and/or orange extract, orange or lemon zest, 1/2 tsp apple pie spice, 1/8 tsp molasses, 1/2 tsp maple syrup or honey, handful of dried cranberries or other dried fruit, nuts), do so now.
    6. When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, transfer to a bowl. Add a splash of your milk of choice and any other additional toppings (dried cranberries, walnuts or another nut, maple syrup or honey, nut butters, etc.).
