Basic Banana Oatmeal (& Variations)

Here's an easy one for you:

If you eat oatmeal regularly, this is simply a great one to have in your repertoire. It's super easy, undeniably tasty, and can be made with minimal ingredients. In a desperate situation, you could prepare this with just three ingredients: water, oats, and bananas. That version might be slightly boring, but it would certainly get the job done.

And for more tips on bananas, check out this post.

Basic Banana Oatmeal

by The Oatmeal Artist
Prep Time: 2 min
Cook Time: 5 min
Ingredients (serves 1)
  • 1 cup milk of choice, or water
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
  • 1 ripe or overripe banana
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  1. Bring milk (I use an equal mixture of almond milk and water) to a boil, add oats, and reduce heat to medium. (If you'd like to add flax or chia seeds, do so now. I recommend flax.)
  2. Mash up banana and add to the oatmeal. Stir.
  3. Once more of the liquid has dissolved, add vanilla extract, a tiny pinch of salt, and cinnamon. Stir.
  4. If you'd like to add any extra ingredients (coconut oil, dried fruit, nuts, sunflower seeds), do so now. (See variations below.)
  5. When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, transfer to a bowl. Serve with another splash of your milk of choice and any other additional toppings (shredded coconut, nuts, etc.).

Okay, so this is already listed as a variation of Peanut Butter Oatmeal. It's so good, I'll list it twice.

Banana & Chocolate Chip
Omit the cinnamon and add chocolate chips when serving.

Replace milk with chocolate milk (like Silk Dark Chocolate Almond Milk) OR stir in a couple spoonfuls of cocoa powder. Omit cinnamon.

Banana, Peanut Butter, & Chocolate Chip
Omit the cinnamon, swirl in peanut butter, and add chocolate chips when serving.

Banana Raisin
Add raisins.

Banana Chai
Use chai spices or cook the oatmeal in brewed chai tea.

Jammin' Banana
Swirl in your favorite jam when serving.

Coconut Banana
Use coconut milk for your liquid. Top with shredded coconut when serving.

Honey-Nut Banana
Add peanut butter and honey when serving.

Banana + [insert other fruit here]
Banana pairs well with several kinds of fruits, like strawberries or blueberries

Spiced Banana
Replace cinnamon with pumpkin pie or apple pie spices (or simply use nutmeg, allspice, etc.). 1/4 a teaspoon would probably work best.

Can't make up your mind? Top it with EVERYTHING.

  3. Is one banana too much for a serving in oatmeal? :/

    1. Not at all. I have a small appetite in the mornings and a full banana gets to be too much for me sometimes. I think most people happily use the whole banana!

  4. This oatmeal goes great with your choco-banana sauce! So tasty!
