Nutty Pumpkin Berry Oatmeal, + Other Hacks for Banana Haters

Dear Banana Haters,

This post is for you. Although it may seem like we play for opposite teams (I'm all like, "BRING ON THE 'NANAS," and you're all, "UGH, I GAG!"), we're not all that different.

You see, as much as I love (and NEED) my daily banana(s), I also know what it's like to loathe an ingredient. Even before my transition to a herbivore lifestyle, I have never appreciated the taste of sour cream. I think it's pretty vile, in fact. If my favorite blog kept making oatmeal topped with sour cream, I would be pretty ticked.

Therefore, I have a solution. You have probably noticed by now that most of my favorite recipes contain banana. Not wanting you to miss out, I have compiled a list of hacks for all you banana haters...including one new recipe (pictured below--scroll to the bottom of this post for the recipe)!

Five "NO BANANA, PLEASE" Hacks

5. Instead of Brownie Batter Oatmeal, try Sweet Potato Fudge Oatmeal.

Some people claim it's better and tastes even more like brownie
batter than the banana version!

4. Instead of PB&J Oatmeal with Banana, try it with apples.

Apples go with PB&J absurdly well. You will not be missing out!

3. Instead of Fudgy Banana & Peanut Butter Oatmeal (*swoon*), try Sweet Potato Fudge Oatmeal topped with peanut butter!

Congrats. You CAN have my favorite oatmeal!

2. Instead of making German Chocolate Baked Oatmeal or Salted Brownie Baked Oatmeal with banana, try the avocado version!

(Psst...I like the avocado version better anyway.)

1. Finally, instead of Nutty 'Nana Berry Oatmeal <3 , try Nutty Pumpkin Berry!

Nutty Pumpkin Berry Oatmeal is the lovechild of Pumpkin Nut Butter Oatmeal and Nutty 'Nana Berry Oatmeal. Don't let us (super cool and absurdly perfect) banana lovers have all the fun!

Nutty Pumpkin Berry Oatmeal

by The Oatmeal Artist
Prep Time: 2 min
Cook Time: 5 min
Ingredients (serves 1)
    For the Oatmeal
    • 1 cup milk of choice, or water
    • 1/2 cup rolled oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
    • 1/3 cup pumpkin puree (can substitute sweet potato or any squash)
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice OR cinnamon
    • 1 tsp maple syrup
    • pinch of salt
    For Topping
    • 1-2 tbsp peanut butter (or your favorite nut butter)
    • handful of your favorite berries
    Instructions
    1. Bring milk (I use an equal mixture of almond milk and water) to a boil, add oats, and reduce heat to medium. (If you'd like to add flax or chia seeds, do so now.)
    2. Let cook for a couple minutes, and then add pumpkin puree, vanilla extract, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spices, and salt. Stir.
    3. When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, transfer to a bowl. Top with peanut butter and berries. Serve with another splash of your milk of choice and any other additional toppings (shredded coconut, nuts, etc.).

    1. Great suggestions! I'm not a huge fan of bananas, so I will definitely try some of these. :)

    2. I love bananas, but developed an allergy to them in 2005. Said allergy includes avocado and latex too :-( Thanks for the banana hacks!

    3. I just can't imagine how it's possible to hate bananas! ;-P these are my fav fruits! But on the other hand, if we replace bananas with pumpkin, it's a little bit healthier as pumpkin has more values: http://www.listonic.com/protips/get/lstlvhfiwe . I've tried oatmeal with pumpkin. It's good, but I still prefer bananas. ;-)
