Peach Pie Oatmeal Smoothie

I used to slurp down tons of smoothies. At the beginning of my junior year of college, I used to whip up some relatively extravagant breakfasts (by college student standards, anyway).*  Sometimes that included oatmeal, but not always. (It wasn't until January or February of that year that oatmeal became a daily ritual.) Often, I would make smoothies. These were usually banana-based (because that's what I could afford), but I occasionally splurged on mangoes, peaches, or pineapple.

*If you're interested, here's a post from my old blog where I documented all my breakfasts for the week.

I never really added oatmeal to my smoothies, though. I thought of that concept a little over a year ago when I made my Green Monster Oatmeal Smoothie, which was actually just a cheap trick to add variety to my blog (at least I'm honest). I was like, "Hey, I'll put oats in a smoothie, so I can have something other than porridge recipes on my blog! Har-har!"

But here I am, adding another smoothie recipe to my blog. This time, however, it's not just a cheap trick. The idea for this recipe came about the other day when I was attempting a new pancake recipe. As I licked the batter, the flavors and creaminess delighted me. It tasted exactly like a peach pie! I realized then that oats in a smoothie add more than just fiber and bulk; they add flavor, too! A smoothie without oats just tastes like peaches. A smoothie with oats tastes earthy and sweet, like someone took a slice of peach pie (crust and all) and blended it up.

This recipe makes enough for one 8 oz glass. If you want a larger serving or you intend to serve multiple people, double or triple the recipe as needed.

Peach Pie Oatmeal Smoothie

by The Oatmeal Artist
Prep Time: 5 min
Ingredients (serves 1)
  • 2 yellow peaches, sliced and frozen
  • 1/3 cup milk of choice
  • 1/3 cup instant oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
optional add-ins
  • 1/4 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
  • flax (milled or whole seed, it doesn't matter)
  • 1/8 tsp molasses
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients (and any optional add-ins) in a blender and blend!

Variation:
Go green! Make this a Green Monster smoothie by blending in your favorite leafy green (spinach, chard, kale, etc.). If you're new to the game, go with spinach: you'll barely taste it! If you're hardcore, try chard or kale. Remove the stems before adding.

  3. Hi Lauren - I love smoothies too! :) Definitely going to be making this one as at the moment we have an abundance of ripe peaches (got to love summer!) I clicked on the link to your old blog documenting your breakfasts and love the fact that you liked Alpen! I love alpen - if I am in a serious rush and have no time to cook anything properly it is my go-to muesli! When did you visit Ireland? I am a quarter irish and will be visiting my grandparents in Dublin in a couple of weeks :) Did you get to England while you were over here?

    1. Hey! I was in Ireland in July 2011. Dublin is my favorite place in the entire world...I'm so jealous of you. :( When we were there, we had a very full agenda. We were given one free afternoon in Dublin, and considered making a rushed trip to England, but decided to go to Howth instead. So no, I did not see England. :(

Alpen is SO good. I miss it!

    2. I am sure you will get there one day! England is amazing too. I love Howth - I love the walk to the lighthouse! WHen we go we always buy a load of fresh fish at the market and cook it ASAP and it is wonderful! (Obviously only if you like fish!)

    3. I definitely remember the fish scent! I love fish, but I gave it up when I went vegetarian (shortly after I came back from Ireland)!

  4. Your rules for breakfast are similar to mine. Especially the first rule. I fell in love with muesli in Munich where it has a cafe/store called My Muesli. I was VERY sad when I finished both of the canisters I brought back to the states.

  6. Can't say I've ever heard of an "oatmeal smoothie", but I'm definitely giving this a try tomorrow morning. It's peach pie... how can I resist?

  7. This turned out really thick, so much so that my pretty powerful blender got very upset. I ended up adding nearly a cup of milk to thin it out. This unfortunately toned down the peach flavor, but I did end up with 2 servings, which was nice. Any suggestions? Should I have blended just the milk and frozen peaches first, then added the oats?

    1. Hmm...I didn't have this problem! I think your peaches might have been harder than mine. Try defrosting them slightly so they have a little "give" to them (but are still frozen).
