Fudgy Banana and Peanut Butter Oatmeal

**This post has been updated since its original post in July 2012**

Which oatmeal do I run home to after a tough day at work? Which oatmeal is good enough to be my breakfast on my 23rd birthday? Which oatmeal do I turn to when my produce drawer is looking empty? Which oatmeal contains the best flavor trio (chocolate, banana, and peanut butter) EVER?

This recipe was originally included as an option in my Variations on Peanut Butter Oatmeal post, but a porridge this good deserves special treatment. We're talking about my favorite recipe, you guys.

After all...it's pretty much heaven in a bowl. Sweet and creamy bananas...salty peanut butter....fudgy chocolate...ahhhh. But it's so simple, too! I always have cocoa powder. I always have peanut butter. I always have bananas. If I don't have a fresh banana available, I have some frozen bananas sliced up in the freezer, waiting for me at my convenience. This recipe is as dependable and cheap as it is delicious.

And if I may, I actually would recommend trying Hershey's Dark Chocolate cocoa powder. I used that for many of my chocolate oatmeal recipes (which is why my chocolate oatmeals are so blackish). However, I frequently make this with regular cocoa powder (like in these photos) and it's still marvelous.

Marvelous enough to be my #1.

If you've tried this recipe, please let me hear your reviews in the comments section! We can fawn over this porridge together.

Fudgy Banana and Peanut Butter Oatmeal

by The Oatmeal Artist
Prep Time: 2 min
Cook Time: 5 min
Ingredients (serves 1)
  • 1 cup milk of choice, or water
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 rounded tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 or 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • pinch of salt
Instructions
  1. Bring milk (I use an equal mixture of almond milk and water) to a boil, add rolled oats, and reduce heat to medium.
  2. Mash up a ripe banana and add to the oatmeal. Stir.
  3. Once more of the liquid has absorbed, add cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir. If it doesn't look very chocolaty, add more cocoa powder.
  4. When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, drop in small clumps of peanut butter and stir in. I don't like to stir mine in completely. I like it left in clumps so I get bursts of peanut butter flavor every few bites. :)
  5. Transfer to a bowl. Serve with another splash of your milk of choice and any other additional toppings (chocolate chips, shredded coconut, nuts, etc.).

  4. This is amazing. I had to hide some bananas so they can ripen and I can make this again. I have also made this a overnight oats and it is still great.

  6. Im in oatmeal "heaven"..........I'm trying this one in the morning!

Our favorite oatmeal recipe (which is eaten daily for breakfast) is baked oatmeal. Just in case you're interested....2 tbsp coconut oil, 2 tbsp sugar, 1/2 cup apple sauce, 2 cups quick oats, 1 cup milk, 1 tsp salt, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder.....mix it all together and pour into 8x8 dish, bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Cut into 6 squares. Put square in bowl with a little maple syrup or honey (or peanut butter :)) on top and add a splash of milk. I could eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! blessings~~angela

    1. Thanks so much! You bake with quick oats?! Don't you think the texture gets a little spongey? Or is it kind of like cake?

  7. Hi Lauren! Just wanted to say I am a BIG fan of your blog!
Quick question: to make this an overnight oats version, would you stir in the peanut butter before putting it in the fridge at night or in the morning before heating up?
    Thanks!

  8. Dessert for breakfast? Yes please :)
I just finished making Fudge Babies, which are little balls of cocoa powder, dates and nuts blended into a brownie-like texture. (recipe can be found on the wonderful Chocolate Covered Katie blog!) I am thinking of crumbling a few of those over this oatmeal! One can never have too much chocolate :)

    1. I'm familiar with Fudge Babies! I follow CCK's blog. That would be an incredible and creative topping idea. Smart!

  10. Do you have the nutritional value for one serving of this please? :)

    1. Sorry, it varies so much depending on what ingredients you use (the most obvious variation being the type of milk you choose). Google "recipe nutrition calculator" and you can find a bunch of sites that allow you to enter in exactly what ingredients you would use!

  12. I turned this into Peanut Butter Blackout Oatmeal this morning using: Hershey's Special Dark cocoa, Dark Chocolate Dreams instead of regular PB & topping with dark chocolate chips. It isn't for everyone, but I loved it.

  14. Has anyone else found that it takes less of the hersheys dark cocoa. I'm a chocoholic but I still feel like the chocolate is too intense when i use the reccomended amount

    1. I haven't used Hershey's Special Dark in ages, so I can't remember if I ever used less of it. If it's too intense, definitely feel free to cut down on the amount! I'm fairly certain I used equal amounts, though; I'm intense like that. :)

  15. Hi I'm a huge fan of your blog it's absolutely amazing! But I just wanted to ask exactly how healthy is a bowl of oatmeal even after the addition of ingredients like cocoa and peanut butter and will it still be suitable for someone on a diet to lose weight?

    1. When you consider the individual ingredients of this recipe, it's pretty nutritious (despite its decadent taste)! The only sugar comes for a banana, and the cocoa powder adds a negligible amount of calories. Prepared as is, I *think* it's around 500 calories, but there are ways you could manipulate it. You could stick to just one tablespoon of peanut butter, or you could use PB2, banana butter (look up Chocoalte Covered Katie's recipe), or Happy Herbivore's Nutty Spread instead (I make it without the cinnamon and other added flavors).

  16. Hi Lauren, I recently found your blog, and I just had to come and tell you I love it. Running out of ideas to variate my porridge has never been an issue, but I am nevertheless excited with the wonderful suggestions you have on here.

I tried this oatmeal recipe of your last week (omitting cocoa) and I really enjoyed it. I never had banana in my oatmeal before, but having tried it it sure is gonna stay in there (rather than sliced on it as before). :)
