Today we're talking about TOPPINGS! Although I tend to stick to the same toppings (sliced almonds, anyone?), I love jazzing up a classic oatmeal with new and exciting topping ideas. If you're a regular reader, you know that I have posted a few recipes for sauce-like toppings (link below, #50), but this post will dare to go further! Some are a little obvious, and some are a little more out there. Nothing is off the table. :)
50 Topping Ideas for Oatmeal
- Nuts - whole, sliced, pieces, or crushed
- Sunflower, pepita, or sesame seeds
- Ch-ch-ch-chia! (shown below)
- Apple sauce
- Homemade caramel sauce
- Lemon (or orange, lime, or grapefruit) zest
- For savory oats: fresh chives, basil, parsley, cilantro
- Chocolate-covered raisins or nuts
- Chocolate-Avocado Mousse
- Nondairy yogurt (shown below)
- Lemon curd
- Granola or a broken-up granola bar
- Chocolate chips...and beyond! Consider white chocolate, peanut butter, butterscotch, mint chocolate, etc.
- Candied citrus peel
- Banana butter
- Cranberry sauce (shown below)
- Chocolate-covered espresso beans
- Crispy rice cereal or corn/wheat flakes
- Grilled fruit
- A cherry!
- Coconut butter
- Crumbs or cubes of quick breads, like banana bread or zucchini bread
- Maple syrup (shown below) or honey
- Coconut whipped cream
- A dusting of instant coffee granules (careful...a little goes a LONG way!)
- Toasted flax seed
- Chocolate syrup
- Crumbled up graham crackers
- Jam, marmalade, and fruit preserves (shown below)

- Shredded coconut or coconut chips
- Melon balls or cubes
- Trail mix
- Espresso
- Roasted fruit (pears, apples, grapes, etc.)

ReplyDeleteThanks, I could always use some ideas for oatmeal toppings! Oh, and have you ever thought of posting a granola recipe? Next to a bowl of oatmeal, a bowl of yummy granola is my favorite way to enjoy breakfast!
ReplyDeleteGranola is very "new" to me, so I've just been experimenting with others' recipes instead of creating my own. I agree; granola is delicious!
