50 Toppings to Spruce Up ANY Porridge!

Today we're talking about TOPPINGS! Although I tend to stick to the same toppings (sliced almonds, anyone?), I love jazzing up a classic oatmeal with new and exciting topping ideas. If you're a regular reader, you know that I have posted a few recipes for sauce-like toppings (link below, #50), but this post will dare to go further! Some are a little obvious, and some are a little more out there. Nothing is off the table. :)

50 Topping Ideas for Oatmeal
  1. Nuts - whole, sliced, pieces, or crushed
  2. Sunflower, pepita, or sesame seeds
  3. Ch-ch-ch-chia! (shown below)
  4. Apple sauce
  5. Homemade caramel sauce
  6. Lemon (or orange, lime, or grapefruit) zest
  7. For savory oats: fresh chives, basil, parsley, cilantro
  8. Chocolate-covered raisins or nuts
  9. Chocolate-Avocado Mousse
  10. Nondairy yogurt (shown below) 


  11. Lemon curd
  12. Granola or a broken-up granola bar
  13. Chocolate chips...and beyond! Consider white chocolate, peanut butter, butterscotch, mint chocolate, etc.
  14. Candied citrus peel
  15. Banana butter
  16. Cranberry sauce (shown below) 
  17. Chocolate-covered espresso beans
  18. Crispy rice cereal or corn/wheat flakes
  19. Grilled fruit
  20. A cherry!
  21. Coconut butter
  22. Crumbs or cubes of quick breads, like banana bread or zucchini bread
  23. Maple syrup (shown below) or honey 
  24. Coconut whipped cream
  25. A dusting of instant coffee granules (careful...a little goes a LONG way!)

  2. Thanks, I could always use some ideas for oatmeal toppings! Oh, and have you ever thought of posting a granola recipe? Next to a bowl of oatmeal, a bowl of yummy granola is my favorite way to enjoy breakfast!

    1. Granola is very "new" to me, so I've just been experimenting with others' recipes instead of creating my own. I agree; granola is delicious!
