This recipe is only for those who love bitter. Sweet tooths need not read on.
First, you take a bitter grapefruit. Then, you stir in some bitter dark cocoa powder. Then, you top it with some more bitter grapefruit. If you're wrinkling your nose, then save yourself some time and just click here instead. If you're salivating like I was, read on.
I love dark chocolate combined with orange, so why not grapefruit? If you like bitter (and I mean you really like bitter), then you should try this combination. If you kind of like bitter, you could always add a little sweetener to mellow it out. :)

Prep Time: 5 min
Cook Time: 5 min
Ingredients (serves 1)
- 1 small grapefruit, or half a large one
- 1/2 cup milk of choice
- 1/3 cup water, or more milk
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (I use Country Choice Organic)
- 2 tbsp dark chocolate cocoa powder (I use Hershey's Special Dark)
- pinch of salt
- honey or other sweetener (optional)
Instructions
- Prep your grapefruit.
- Bring milk and water to a boil, add oats, and reduce heat to medium. (If you'd like to add flax or chia seeds, do so now.)
- Take ONE half of the grapefruit and spoon each segment into the saucepan. Stir until the segments break apart and mix into the oatmeal.
- Once more of the liquid has absorbed, add cocoa powder and salt. Stir. (This is a good point to taste it and decide if you want to add sweetener or not.)
- If you'd like to add any extra ingredients (coconut oil, dried fruit, nuts, sunflower seeds), do so now.
- When you're pleased with the consistency of the oatmeal, transfer to a bowl. Spoon out the remaining grapefruit segments from the other half to top the oatmeal (like the pictures). Serve with another splash of milk and any other additional toppings (shredded coconut, nuts, etc.). I added (semi-sweet) chocolate chips.

Oh. My. God. This is amazing. My fridge was barren, very little fruit, and not much else, aside from a few grapefruits, dark chocolate chips, and of course - oatmeal! I was skeptical, but wow, this is sooooo good! I'm making this again tomorrow :) I DID add a packet of stevia sweetener, but it's perfect otherwise! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so glad! This is not a hugely popular recipe. As you implied with your skepticism, it doesn't SOUND that appealing, but yes, it's delicious! Grapefruit is so tasty in oatmeal.
DeleteThis wasn't bitter to me at all... It was delicious! Though, I have been known to enjoy super dark chocolate, black coffee, etc. Grapefruit - or at least, good grapefruit - has become sweet for me after not using sweetener for so long. And paired with cocoa powder... So good! I've really enjoyed all your grapefruit recipes.
ReplyDeleteI've been working through many of your recipes over the past six months or so, after becoming addicted to oatmeal in college (Quick, cheap, and oh so good), and have loved every one! Of course, I had to improvise with some, only having access to a fridge and microwave in a dorm. But its been a delicious adventure. Thanks! ;)
I'm glad you like it! I, of course, thought it was wonderful. I also eat dark chocolate (I tried 90% recently and thought it was THE BEST) and black coffee, so it was wonderful. I was just afraid of some sweettooths coming along and being all "OMG THIS MADE ME GAG!" :)
DeleteThank you so much! How courageous of you to put up with microwave cooking. What a pain!
can I make this as an overnight oatmeal???
ReplyDeleteYes--reduce the liquid to just 1/2 cup of water or milk (whatever kind you prefer).
DeleteI was skeptical of the flavor combination, but decided to go with it this morning. I was blown away by how delicious it was!! I made it in the microwave and just combined the half of grapefruit and oats with some water. Then once it was done added 1 tbsp. cocoa and the other half of grapefruit and zapped it again. My secret? A tsp. of cinnamon - so good!! Thank you for sharing such an interesting combination that I never would have thought of.
ReplyDeleteFascinating! I'll have to try that.
DeleteThis was delicious! I used just water to cook the oats, added 3/4 of a mashed banana for sweetness, omitted the salt, and added a tsp of cinnamon like the poster above suggested. I love the grapefruit and chocolate combo! This might be my new fav...
